If you're buying your first Sur-Ron, there is a good chance you're now stuck between two very different choices. Do you buy the current 2026 Sur-Ron Light Bee X, with 10kW maximum power, 295Nm wheel torque, 59kg kerb weight and a £3,295 UK RRP? Or do you wait for the new Light Bee 2, with 24kW maximum power, 410Nm wheel torque, a larger battery and much more serious factory performance?
For a first-time buyer, the answer is not automatically the newer bike. In fact, for many people buying their first electric dirt bike, the Light Bee X may be the more sensible place to start.
Sur-Ron UK currently lists the MY26 Light Bee X at 10kW, 295Nm, 50mph and 59kg, with an official UK RRP of £3,295. The Light Bee 2 is in a different performance category: 24kW peak power, 410Nm wheel torque, 65kg kerb weight and around 56mph top speed. That means the Light Bee 2 has 24kW ÷ 10kW = 2.4 times the peak power of the LBX. That sounds impressive — it is impressive — but for a new rider, bigger is not automatically better.
Light Bee X: better fit for many new e-moto riders who prioritise light weight, control and price.
Light Bee 2: better fit for experienced riders who already know they want significantly more factory performance.
The quick answer
Choose the Light Bee X first if: this is your first e-moto or dirt bike, you want lower weight, you want something easier to manoeuvre, 10kW already sounds like plenty, you will mostly ride trails or recreationally, you want the established Light Bee platform, you want to spend £3,295 rather than waiting for a more expensive new model, or you want a bike now.
Choose the Light Bee 2 first if: you already have meaningful motorcycle, motocross or e-moto experience, you specifically want much stronger acceleration, you know 10kW will not satisfy you, you want the larger battery, you want the latest electronics and traction-control systems, you would immediately plan major power upgrades to an LBX, or you are comfortable with a more aggressive bike.
For many completely new riders, we would start by looking at the LBX before jumping straight to 24kW. That does not mean the LBX is a tame bike. It isn't.

The important thing here is that the difference is not simply 10kW vs 24kW. It is also 59kg vs 65kg, £3,295 vs approximately £4,500 expected, established platform vs new platform, and manageable performance vs substantially stronger acceleration.
Is the Light Bee X actually good for beginners?
For many first-time e-moto riders, yes. The strongest reason is not that it is "slow". It isn't. The 2026 LBX has 10kW maximum power, 295Nm wheel torque, a claimed 50mph top speed, smooth FOC-controlled throttle response, adjustable power characteristics, Eco and Sport riding modes, and 59kg kerb weight.
Sur-Ron says its FOC controller makes thousands of adjustments per second to deliver smooth and predictable throttle response. That combination can make the LBX easier to learn on than a machine with far more peak output.
Owners regularly raise the same question online. One rider who bought an LBX as their first motorised bike described learning in Eco mode before progressing to Sport as confidence improved. Another rider looking for a first e-moto specifically worried about whether the LBX would be too much or whether they would outgrow it. Those are owner experiences, not formal safety evidence, but they show exactly what real buyers are trying to work out.
Is 10kW too much for a beginner?
It can be. That needs to be said clearly. The LBX is not a child's toy simply because the Light Bee 2 now produces 24kW. A claimed 50mph top speed and 295Nm wheel torque are serious numbers.
If somebody has never ridden a motorbike, no throttle-control experience, no off-road experience, no cycling or MTB background, or poor balance or confidence, then even the LBX should be approached carefully. The right answer is not "10kW is safe". The right answer is: 10kW may be a more manageable starting point than 24kW, but both require respect.
Is 24kW too much for a first-time rider?
For some riders, probably. For others, not necessarily. The Light Bee 2 has much more sophisticated rider electronics than the old assumption of "24kW and hold on". Sur-Ron's published Light Bee 2 information includes SRTC off-road traction control, three throttle-response settings, multiple regenerative braking levels, an SWC wheelie-control system, an N1 Beginner wheelie mode, and adjustable rider controls. Sur-Ron also says its 24kW output is capable of 0–31mph in around 1.8 seconds.
So the Light Bee 2 gives riders tools to manage its performance. But electronics do not remove the underlying performance. A 24kW, 65kg e-moto with this level of acceleration is still an extremely serious first bike. One of the first questions appearing in current community discussion about the Light Bee 2 is essentially whether all that power is actually usable or whether it just produces wheelspin and wheelies. That tells you something about the level of performance buyers are expecting from it.
What if I already ride motorcycles?
Then "first Sur-Ron" and "first motorbike" are two different things. Someone coming from motocross, enduro, trials, road motorcycles or powerful e-motos may have no problem adapting to the Light Bee 2.
If you already understand throttle control, body positioning, braking, traction, cornering, wheelspin and loose surfaces, then the Light Bee 2 becomes a much stronger first-Sur-Ron candidate. A rider moving from a petrol dirt bike to electric is not the same customer as someone coming from a BMX or bicycle. This is why there should never be one universal "best beginner Sur-Ron".
What if I come from mountain biking?
This is where the LBX becomes particularly interesting. The Light Bee platform has long appealed to mountain-bike riders because it is much lighter and more compact than a conventional dirt motorcycle. At 59kg, the LBX is still heavy compared with a downhill mountain bike, but considerably lighter than many conventional motorbikes.
That can make the transition feel more natural for riders who already understand standing position, trail lines, loose surfaces, braking modulation and body movement, but are new to motorcycle-style throttle power. That does not mean MTB experience instantly makes somebody an experienced motorcyclist. But it can help.
What if this is literally my first powered bike?
Then I would be cautious about chasing 24kW. Ask yourself what you actually need in your first six months. You probably need to learn throttle control, braking, cornering, body position, traction, terrain reading, balance and how the bike reacts when grip disappears. None of those skills require 24kW.
In fact, excess power can make poor technique harder to identify because the bike can overwhelm traction or confidence before the rider develops the fundamentals. For a true first-time rider, the LBX's lower power and lower weight can be meaningful advantages.
Will I outgrow the Light Bee X?
The short answer: you might. But that does not automatically mean you should skip it. Buyers regularly ask exactly this question in Sur-Ron communities. Some owners say the LBX is an ideal platform to learn on before moving to something more powerful. Others argue that performance-focused riders quickly start looking at upgrades or bigger bikes.
The key is understanding what "outgrow" means. You may outgrow the LBX if you start wanting harder acceleration, bigger jumps, faster motocross riding, more hill-climbing performance, more battery capacity, or more sustained high-power riding. But you may never outgrow what makes the LBX attractive: low weight, agility, manoeuvrability, simplicity, a huge aftermarket, and its playful feel. A faster motorcycle does not necessarily replace those qualities.
Should I buy the bigger bike so I don't have to upgrade later?
This sounds sensible. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. The argument is: "I'll buy the most powerful one now and grow into it." That can work for experienced riders. For a true beginner, it can also mean spending more money on performance you do not yet know how to use.
There is nothing wrong with learning on a lighter, less powerful machine and deciding later what you actually want. People often discover after six months that their priorities are completely different from what they imagined before riding. Maybe they thought they wanted maximum speed, then discover they love tight technical trails. Maybe they thought they wanted huge power, then realise low weight matters more. You only really learn that by riding.
Is the LBX too slow to keep long term?
For many riders, no. The MY26 Light Bee X is already considerably stronger than older models. Sur-Ron increased its maximum output from 8kW to 10kW for MY26. It now produces 295Nm at the wheel and a claimed 50mph. That is enough performance for a huge amount of recreational off-road riding. A first-time rider should be careful about judging 10kW purely because 24kW now exists. Ten kilowatts did not suddenly become slow.
Is the Light Bee X easier to control?
Potentially, yes. The lower maximum power, light chassis and predictable controller characteristics all work in its favour. The Light Bee 2 adds electronics specifically designed to help manage its extra performance, which is a positive. But there is still a fundamental difference between managing a 10kW machine and managing one capable of 24kW. For many newer riders, having less performance available can itself make learning simpler.
What about Eco mode?
Eco mode matters. One of the advantages of modern electric motorcycles is that riding modes can change the character of the bike significantly. For new riders, starting in a reduced-output mode can be a sensible way of learning throttle movement, braking, body positioning and low-speed control before progressing.
Owner discussions repeatedly mention exactly this progression: learning in Eco first and moving into Sport once confidence develops. That is anecdotal rider experience, but it is highly relevant to the actual buyer question.
Which bike is better for trail riding?
For a first-time trail rider, I would lean towards the LBX. Not because it has better maximum specifications — because trails reward low weight, control, confidence, manoeuvrability, traction and throttle precision.
The LBX weighs 59kg. That is useful when you need to turn around on a narrow trail, dab a foot, recover after a stall, pick the bike up, or negotiate slow technical sections. One 2026 owner described spending much of their off-road time at only 10–20mph because terrain comes at you extremely quickly, even though the bike can go much faster. That is an important reality check. Trail riding is not automatically a 50mph activity.
Which bike is better for motocross?
If you're already competent and want serious performance, the Light Bee 2 has the stronger case. Its 24kW output, larger battery and more advanced electronics are better suited to riders who want harder acceleration, bigger jumps, higher-speed riding and more power reserve. But for somebody learning motocross basics, power alone is not the goal. Technique matters more.
What about rider height?
This is one of the most common practical questions around the LBX. The current LBX has an 830mm seat height. Some taller riders feel perfectly comfortable. Others, particularly above roughly 6ft, report wanting changes such as taller bars, bar risers, larger wheel setups or revised peg position.
Those are owner experiences rather than manufacturer fit limits. One recent discussion included a 6ft 3in rider saying they needed changes to avoid feeling cramped, while another 5ft 10in owner felt fine. That is why we would never choose solely from height. Sit on the bike. Better still, ride it if possible.
What about shorter riders?
The LBX's 59kg weight can make it attractive to shorter or lighter riders. What matters is not only whether both feet touch the ground. Think about inseam, reach to the bars, arm position, standing posture, whether you can control the bike at walking pace, and whether you can pick it up comfortably. A smaller rider may prefer the LBX even if the Light Bee 2 is technically more advanced.
What about rider weight?
Weight affects suspension behaviour, acceleration, braking, range and how the bike feels underneath you. A heavier adult may find the LBX physically smaller or may want firmer suspension setup. Again, there is no single number at which it suddenly becomes "too small". Community discussion shows adults around 200lb still riding LBXs, while taller/heavier riders sometimes move toward larger platforms or modify setup. If you're unsure, physical fit is one of the strongest reasons to visit the showroom instead of ordering purely from specifications.
Is the Light Bee 2 better for bigger riders?
Possibly. Its slightly greater weight and more aggressive performance may suit some larger or more experienced riders better. But the Light Bee 2 is still part of the lightweight Light Bee family. It is not simply a mini Ultra Bee replacement. If you specifically want a much more full-size motorcycle feel, you should also compare the Ultra Bee rather than assuming the Light Bee 2 solves every fit issue.
What about the Sur-Ron Hyper Bee for beginners?
This deserves mentioning because it is another current UK Sur-Ron. Sur-Ron UK lists the MY26 Hyper Bee at 8kW maximum power, 185Nm torque, 40mph top speed, 39kg kerb weight and £2,995 RRP. That makes it substantially lighter than the LBX.
However, a small physical size does not automatically make a bike ideal for every beginner. The Hyper Bee is particularly relevant to smaller riders and younger progression riders, but adult fit and intended riding matter. So if the LBX itself feels physically too large, the Hyper Bee is worth considering. If the Hyper Bee feels too small, the LBX remains the more natural all-round step.
Which is best for a completely new adult rider?
Our starting point would usually be: try the Light Bee X first. It gives you serious performance, relatively low weight, a mature platform, a huge owner community, and plenty of room to progress. If you sit on it and immediately feel that the bike is too small, too mild or not suited to your experience, then move up. But I would not recommend a complete beginner jumping straight to 24kW simply because they are worried about "outgrowing" 10kW.
Which is best for an experienced petrol rider going electric?
The Light Bee 2 becomes much more attractive. Someone already comfortable with motorcycles may appreciate the stronger acceleration, the larger battery, the more advanced electronics and the extra performance headroom. That rider is less likely to benefit from deliberately choosing less power for learning purposes.
Which is best for someone coming from an e-bike?
Usually the LBX. An e-bike rider already understands two-wheel balance, braking and basic trail handling, but the power jump into e-moto territory is still significant. The LBX gives that rider a more logical transition than immediately jumping to 24kW.
What if I am worried I will get bored of the LBX?
This is a real concern. But there is a difference between getting used to a bike and outgrowing it. Every fast machine eventually feels normal. That is adaptation. It does not necessarily mean the motorcycle has stopped being capable. Before buying for hypothetical future boredom, think about what type of riding you actually want to become good at.
What if all my friends ride more powerful bikes?
This is where bad buying decisions happen. If everybody around you rides 20kW-plus e-motos, you may feel pressure to buy the same thing. But your friends' skill level, size, budget and terrain may be completely different. Buy the motorcycle for your own ability. Not theirs.
Is the LBX safer than the Light Bee 2?
I would not describe either bike as inherently "safe". The Light Bee X has less peak power and is lighter. The Light Bee 2 has more sophisticated electronic rider aids. Those are different advantages. Actual safety depends far more on rider judgement, training, terrain, speed, protective equipment, maintenance and riding environment. So the correct claim is: the LBX may be more approachable for some beginners, not universally safer.
What protective equipment should a first-time rider use?
At minimum, appropriate off-road riding equipment should be taken seriously. That generally means a full-face or motocross helmet, gloves, boots, eye protection, knee protection, elbow protection and body/chest protection where appropriate. The exact equipment depends on terrain and riding style. The biggest mistake would be treating an e-moto like a bicycle simply because it is electric. A 50mph LBX is not a bicycle.
Should I learn in Eco mode first?
For many new riders, that is sensible. Start with low-speed control, gentle throttle inputs, braking, cornering, standing position, controlled hill starts and basic traction management. Then increase performance as your confidence and technique improve. The goal is not to unlock Sport mode as quickly as possible. The goal is to become a better rider.
How much difference does 6kg really make?
Quite a lot in certain situations. The difference between 59kg and 65kg is 65kg − 59kg = 6kg, or around 6 ÷ 59 × 100 = 10.2%. For straight-line riding, that may not feel dramatic. For lifting, manoeuvring, recovering from a fall, technical terrain and low-speed balance, it can matter.
Does the Light Bee 2 have better range?
It has the larger battery. The LBX uses approximately 2.5kWh. The Light Bee 2 uses 3.53kWh. That is roughly 3.53 ÷ 2.5 = 1.41, or about 41% more nominal battery energy. That does not mean 41% more real-world range in every situation because riding style, terrain and power use all affect consumption. But if range and battery capacity are major priorities, the Light Bee 2 has the stronger specification.
Which one is cheaper?
The current MY26 Light Bee X has an official UK RRP of £3,295. MotoEbikes currently expects the Light Bee 2 to retail at approximately £4,500. That Light Bee 2 figure is our current estimate and is not yet a confirmed Sur-Ron UK RRP. If that estimate proves correct, £4,500 − £3,295 = £1,205 difference. That is a significant amount of money for a first motorcycle.
Should I spend the extra £1,205 on the Light Bee 2?
Only if the additional capability matters to you. The extra money potentially buys considerably more power, a larger battery, stronger factory performance, newer electronics and more sophisticated rider aids. But if your first year consists mostly of learning and recreational trail riding, you may get more benefit from spending some of that money on proper protective kit, transport, training, tyres, setup and riding time rather than simply buying the larger specification.
What if I plan to modify the LBX?
Light modifications are one thing. A full power build is another. The LBX has one of the most mature aftermarket ecosystems in the e-moto world. That is a genuine advantage. But if you already know your plan is 10kW → controller → battery → 20kW+, then stop. At that point, the Light Bee 2 deserves serious consideration from day one.
New vs proven platform
This is another first-bike consideration people overlook. The LBX platform has been around for years. That means lots of owner knowledge, many aftermarket parts, common setup information, large communities and widespread familiarity with the bike. The Light Bee 2 is a new generation with a much more advanced specification, but its ownership ecosystem will naturally be less mature at launch. For a first-time buyer who values simplicity and support, the established LBX ecosystem is worth something.
Is the LBX road legal?
The Light Bee X discussed in this article is off-road only. Do not buy an LBX intending to use it illegally on public roads. Sur-Ron UK sells a separate Light Bee L1E road-legal model. This is especially important for first-time buyers because people frequently confuse Sur-Ron's off-road and road-legal versions.
Can a 16-year-old ride a Sur-Ron?
That depends entirely on the model and where it is being ridden. An off-road Light Bee X is for appropriate private/off-road use, not public-road use. Road-legal variants have separate licence, registration, insurance and age requirements. If this is genuinely your first electric dirt bike, do not automatically assume you need the new 24kW Light Bee 2. The MY26 Light Bee X already gives you 10kW, 295Nm, around 50mph, 59kg kerb weight, an established platform and £3,295 UK pricing. For many first-time riders, that is already a lot of motorcycle.
The Light Bee 2 is the better choice when you have a clear reason to need what it offers. If your reason is simply "24kW sounds better than 10kW", that is not enough. If your reason is "I am already an experienced rider, I know I want much stronger factory performance, I want the larger battery and I would otherwise modify the LBX immediately", then yes, wait for the Light Bee 2.
Buy for the rider you are. Not the rider you think you might become.
